By: Gabrielle Sierra
Chalkfoot Theatre Arts presents THE RIDDLE OF THE SANDS, adapted by Philip Dart from the novel by Erskine Childers at the Jermyn Street Theatre 5th - 22nd May 2010.
In the early years of the twentieth century set against a background of sharply declining Anglo-German relations, Carruthers, a plucky young buck from the foreign office is contacted by an old university chum asking him to join in a yachting holiday in the German Frisian islands. Expecting a lazy cruise on a luxury yacht, his dreams are shattered when he finds that he and his friend Davies are the only crew aboard the converted lifeboat ‘Dulcibella'. But not even the hazards of ship-board life can prepare him for the perilous adventure to come. Riddle of The Sands is a prescient vision of two nations soon to fight the First World War. It paints the portrait of a time gone by, mixing good old British pluck and patriotism with the darker threat of the espionage and militarism that was to haunt the century to come. Generally regarded as the father of the twentieth century spy novel, Erskine Childers went on to inspire a generation of writers, including John Le Carré and Ian Fleming.16b Jermyn Street
