Cameron Mackintosh Gets Approval for Demolition and Renovation of Ambassadors Theatre

The Evening Standard recently reported that Cameron Mackintosh has plans in mind for the future of the West End's Ambassadors Theatre. Mackintosh is eyeing a full demolishing of the theatre leaving only the facade intact. His goal is to redesign the interior in order to make it more flexible in hosting new productions and allow for subsidised theatres to bring their new works to the West End.

Last week, The Stage reported that Mackintosh received approval to go through with the renovations with one caveat. The new theatre will be limited to 16 weeks per year of commercial productions. The decision came from the Camden Council where the issue was raised concerning the theatre's intentions to become a home for subsidised productions. The limit will guarantee the theatre upholds this aim.

The theatre currently holds 444 seats, which Mackintosh plans on expanding to between 450 and 475. There will be an additional floor added as rehearsal space for larger productions, as well as a cabaret space added to the bar area downstairs. The theatre will be renamed after legendary musical maestro Stephen Sondheim.

The Ambassadors Theatre was designed by architect W. G. R. Sprague. It was the original home of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, which has been running since 1952. It is currently hosting the West End production of David Eldridge's Beginning.
