Book Review: NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE MONOLOGUES, Michael Bryher

For any budding young actor keen to make their name on the West End stage, small screen or musical touring scene, it all begins with an audition.

This new publication, a collaboration between Nick Hern Books and the National Youth Theatre, is the ultimate guide to auditions for young actors. With detailed explanatory notes for every piece of its 75-strong compilation, this must-have guide is sure to bolster the confidence of those lining up to take part in the most important minutes of their lives.

The book itself is compiled of 75 excerpts from National Youth Theatre plays dating back to 1967, with the first play that the NYT commissioned themselves. Amongst this are instantly well known names, such as T S Elliot and Brian Friel, but it also samples a number of lesser-known but equally rich pieces.

The real bonus of this particular library of suggested audition texts is the insight from NYT Associate Artist Michael Bryher. His unique perspective on how to tackle these pieces forensically unpicks each one, in turn unlocking advice that really does make the reader reach a greater understanding.

The book also features short interviews with actors who have played the roles selected. Offering advice on character, audition advice and other sage tips makes the reader even more relaxed with the text, which will in turn will undoubtedly aid the delivery in those crucial moments.

Some may view the book as too prescriptive - breaking down a character to ask questions like "Who is he talking to? The audience." It's important to remember, however, that the book aims to be accessible even to those who have never been to a theatre before.

The book also offers a number of texts in full through their website, which is a great added extra for those keen to explore the plays in greater detail.

The market for books on audition guidance and monologue pieces is saturated, but this book really does stand out as a carefully compiled, insightful and considered selection that offers a unique and often refreshing perspective on the broad selection of texts.

For those interested in learning more about the youth theatre audition process, and also for those who are just interested in digging a bit deeper into plays, this book is a sure-fire winner - and might even squeeze into your Christmas stocking!
