Yes, OK, I went to the cinema to see High School Musical 3. And yes, I was 28 at the time. And yes, Corbin Bleu was one of the reasons I wanted to see In The Heights on this trip. Now we've got those little confessions out of the way, let's crash on, shall we?

First of all, Bleu holds the show together very well, and this is amazing bearing in mind that half the time I couldn't hear a word he was saying from my seat in the front mezzanine. Really, some enunciation would help, Corbin - just imagine you've got to make yourself heard over a gym-full of bouncing basketballs. Actually I've noticed that quite a bit this week - the younger generation of performers tend to mumble their consonants much more; perhaps it's just that the more experienced stars are used to having to enunciate for cloth-eared tourists?

I find myself getting old now and having little to no patience with hateful selfish juvenile leads, so poor Nina Rosario was bound to incur my wrath regardless of how well she was performed. But - spoilers ahoy - hooray for the big brave men subordinating and saving their poor helpless womenfolk at the end! Who knew? I exaggerate, of course, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that I did enjoy In The Heights but found it grating and derivative in places, which surprised me because the score feels so new and vibrant still. And it was more exciting than I can possibly explain to see Priscilla Lopez on stage - how did I not know she was in it before?
