Review: JONNY WOO'S UN-ROYAL VARIETY, Hackney Empire

Review: JONNY WOO'S UN-ROYAL VARIETY, Hackney Empire Back for its third year, Jonny Woo brings his eclectically exuberant production to the Hackney Empire, promising it to be the most spectacular yet. And it is certainly fabulous. Woo has curated an event that features artists from a wide range of performance mediums, cultures and experiences. Celebrating individuality in its finest form, the night is a spectacular sensation from start to finish.

Woo acts as the compere throughout, treating the audience to various original songs and comedy skits. There is no expense spared in the design; Woo radiates from the stage in every single extravagant costume change. They dazzle in sequins and glitter, and at times go nude, which is equally as teasing and provocative. The whole ensemble is a Technicolor wonder.

There are over 15 featured acts that perform, who each offer something unique. A mixture of cabaret, comedy, lip-sync, opera and dance, it's impossible to pick out those that are 'the best'. And there's no need to, because it's not about that; instead it's about showcasing the brilliant diversity of UK and overseas talent, both from emerging and established artists alike.

Everyone individually shines, but one of my personal favourites was rising comedy star Mawaan Rizwan. Appearing last year as a cameo, he more than earns his place in the line up by performing a sketch that's incredibly hilarious, featuring audience participation and a techno-inspired song about mangos. But it's not just funny, his multi-layered composition discusses culture, sexuality, faith and family expectations. It's incredibly personal and makes a lovely impact on the room.

Comedy is a running theme throughout. Arguably one of London's top drag queens, Myra Dubois says the things the majority are too afraid to say. Her jokes land like a knife that pokes at all the taboo parts of the brain. It's outrageous, over the top, no holes barred fun - exactly the type of thing you had no idea that you needed. And a special mention has to go to Le Gateau Chocolat, who once again prove that they are one of the most wonderful acts in cabaret right now.

This is a genuine variety show and with such excellent programming, is one of the theatrical highlights of the year.

Jonny Woo's Un-Royal Variety played at the Hackney Empire 19-20 October.
