The Royal Shakespeare Company has been running relaxed performances in Stratford-Upon-Avon since 2013, but Sunday marked their first ever relaxed performance - of Matilda - for a West End audience, bringing the stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's courageous and loved tale to audiences affected by autism and other learning disabilities.

The show was modified slightly to reduce stress and anxious feelings in the audience; most noticeable was the change in lighting and sound levels. The atmosphere was calm and comforting for every audience member, with designated 'chill-out areas' for those who had to leave the auditorium.

Relaxed performances are becoming much more prominent in our theatre world now, and it seems like the perfect way to let these wonderful tales be seen by everyone. The supportive environment created is beautiful to see, from the cast giving a welcome speech at the beginning to the front of house staff being at your side for any form of help.

The next relaxed performance date has not been announced yet, but after the success of Sunday it is sure to be soon. Let's hope that other shows in town follow suit and do the same.
