ATC Clarifies THE EVENTS by David Greig as a Fictional Story

By: Mar. 26, 2013

In light of Sunday's Observer piece and The Young Vic's season announcement this morning, please see below the statement by ATC regarding their forthcoming production of The Events by David Greig. This is an ATC commission.

The Events

ATC's forthcoming project The Events, which premieres at The Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh this August before a tour and London run at The Young Vic in the autumn, is a challenging new work by playwright David Greig that examines the nature of forgiveness, the limits of human empathy and the need to understand extreme acts of violence. It is a fictional account of an individual's reaction to a politically motivated and murderous attack on a society from within. Directed by Ramin Gray and featuring local choirs and a soaring modern soundtrack, The Events is a play that poses the question 'how far should forgiveness stretch in the face of atrocity?'

On Sunday March 24, a news piece ran in The Observer that, in its headline, referred The Events as being a musical about Anders Breivik and the 2011 Norway massacre. This is not the case and The Observer has subsequently corrected the title of their report online. Unfortunately the original error has been duplicated in other media. We wish to make clear that The Events is a serious work that tells a fictional story. During the creation of the piece, the company and writer undertook some research in Norway in order to examine how both individuals and institutions reacted to the aftermath of the events of 22 July 2011. This presumably is the source of the misleading headline.

ATC and David Greig are not, nor ever have been working on a project that can be described as a musical about Brevivik and his acts and we regret any offence that the erroneous headline may have caused.
