Washington National Opera Presents OPERA IN THE OUTFIELD 9/22

By:

On Thursday, September 22, Washington National Opera (WNO) will present the fourth-annual Opera in the Outfield, a free, live opera broadcast at Nationals Park. This year WNO will simulcast its season-opening production of Puccini's classic melodrama Tosca, starring American soprano Patricia Racette. Thousands of "fans" of all ages are expected for this community event. Starting today, members of the public may pre-register online for free, reserved seating sections at OperaintheOutfield.org; pre- registrants will be entered to win season tickets to the Opera.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the festive ballpark atmosphere. Entertainment and activities include:

· Exhibition performances by community youth groups such as the Greenbelt S.I.T.Y. Stars double-dutch team of Greenbelt, Md., the award-winning Yorktown High School Marching Band from Arlington, Va., and the District-based Taratibu Pan-African Step Team.

· A screening of the Warner Bros. cartoon "What's Opera Doc?," starring Bugs Bunny and his nemesis Elmer Fudd. With a libretto set to Wagner's iconic "Ride of the Valkyries," this parody of opera is best known for Elmer Fudd's proclamation "Kill the wabbit!"

· Event sponsor M&M's® will share treats and an M&M® character, the popular "Ms. Green," will roam the stadium.

· Chances to win prizes, including a VIP suite for a Nationals game and tickets to Kennedy Center performances, including Les Misérables, The Nutcracker, and a National Symphony Orchestra concert.
