LOS TREINTA Plays The GALA Theatre, 7/30 & 7/31

DC Arts Center and GALA Theatre present LOS TREINTA a celebration of the thirty-year history of the Salvadorean presence in Washington DC. LOS TREINTA is a research, oral history, and performance project that brought together artists, scholars, and students to explore the presence of Salvadoreans in the Washington DC area over the last thirty years. Working together, this team has deeply explored the evolution of our migration and presence. The basis of the process was research - looking at data and statistics, reviewing articles from local papers over the years, and most importantly, interviews and conversations with the people who lived through these thirty years. The real voice of the performance comes directly from their stories, anecdotes and concerns.

LOS TREINTA is written and performed by Quique Aviles and directed by B. Stanley. This marks the sixth project that deals with immigration and the Latino experience on which they have collaborated over the past thirteen years. LOS TREINTA will be further developed and have a longer run at the DC Arts Center in the fall of 2010. This program is made possible with the generous support of the Humanities Council of Washington DC as a part of their 30th Anniversary Special Grants series.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Quique Avilés is a poet, actor and community activist whose work is dedicated to addressing social issues through performance and poetry. A native of El Salvador, Quique has been writing and performing about issues of race, identity, and the plight of poor people in the US for 30 years. In 1985 he founded the LatiNegro Theater collective, and in 1999 co-founded and was artistic director of Sol & Soul.

GALA is celebrating its 34rd season of presenting the range of Hispanic theatre, music, dance, spoken word, poetry and the visual arts from Latin America, Spain, the Caribbean, and the United States. GALA is supported in part by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, the D.C. Mayor's office on Latino Affairs, private foundations, corporations and individuals. GALA is a member of Theater Communications Group, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, the National Performance Network, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, the League of Washington Theaters, the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington, and the Latino Federation of Greater Washington. GALA is an acronym (Grupo de Artistas Latin Americanos) and should be written in all capital letters. The name of our venue is GALA Theatre. Please refrain from using any other terms.

The District of Columbia Arts Center, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit arts space dedicated to promoting the freshest, most under-recognized artists in the Washington metropolitan area. We encourage an ongoing dialogue between new artists and the greater art community, and assist artists in the business of production. Located in the heart of Adams Morgan, DCAC is comprised of a theater, gallery, and administrative offices. DCAC has received local, national and international reviews of its 100 visual arts exhibitions and 500 performance events over the years. Poets, painters, actors, storytellers, sculptors, and performance artists have been drawn to the Center from around the corner to around the world, further illustrating the continual need for DCAC.
