Sandglass Theater's Voices of Community Series kicks off this weekend with inspired and award-winning playwright and performance artist: Lenelle Moïse, performing her one-woman show Womb-Words, Thirsting at Sandglass Theater in Putney, VT. This is a collaborative presentation by Sandglass Theater, Next Stage Arts Project, and Green Mountain Crossroads.

Mixing a brew full of womanist Vodou jazz, queer theory hip-hop, spoken word, and song, Womb-Words, Thirsting is an interactive performance of patchwork poetic storytelling delivered, slam-style, from the gut. Haitian-American solo performer Moïse, re-conceives memory, dances revolution and reclaims F-words. Watch as she channels protective parents, first girl crushes, tough neighbors and the fiercely divine feminine. Womb-Words, Thirsting is an illuminating, empowering and hilarious evening of theatre about growing up immigrant, working-class, politicized and queer(ed).

Lenelle Moïse is a traveling poet, award-winning playwright and solo performance artist who creates jazz-infused, hip-hop bred, politicized texts about Haitian-American identity, creative resistance and the intersection of race, class, gender, sexuality, memory and spirit. As part of her week long residency in Putney, Lenelle will be leading two incredible workshops at Next Stage Arts Project.

The Workshops:

Tuesday, Oct 29, 6:00pm - 7:30pm at Next Stage Arts Project
Spoken Word, Self-Naming, & Resistance : Combines live demonstration, writing prompts, theatre exercises, audio recordings and group discussion to explore performance poetry as an activist art-form, building on the notion that "the personal is political." Moïse recounts the history of the Spoken Word - especially as it relates to jazz, the Black Arts Movement, Hip Hop and Slam - and participants collectively interpret texts, practice persuasive performance techniques and start composing their own "I Am..." poems in a constructive environment. Workshop will take place at Next Stage Arts Project.

Wednesday, Oct 30, 6:00pm - 8:00pm at Next Stage Arts Project
Radical Voice & Movement : an interactive and highly physical performance workshop for actors, musicians, dancers, poets or anyone interested in radical self-expression, during which the voice & body are explored as political texts that compliment the written word.

Both workshops are open to all and cost $25 each. Scholarships are available, don't hesitate to ask! Part of the mission of the Voices of Community series is to offer opportunities for our local community to interact and work with world-class artists from a diverse background. Space in the workshops is limited and advanced registration is required through Green Mountain Crossroads: Please call 802-490-0692.
