The Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater Presents FLEETING MOMENTS/STOLEN GLANCES, Now thru 11/11

By:

The Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater presents FLEETING MOMENTS/STOLEN GLANCES-an exhibition of the work of Steven P. Goodman, today, October 5th through November 11th, with an artist's reception today, October 12th from 5 – 7 pm.

Steven Goodman's small scale landscape paintings demonstrate his mastery of technique with deftly placed brush strokes and spot-on color choices. The exhibit features these and larger works including some of Goodman's digital prints. Goodman started his art career as a painter over 30 years ago, after receiving his B.A. at UVM and then studying at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in France and Parsons School of Design in New York. Then in 1990 he put away his brushes and began concentrating solely on digital imagery. Using the computer as a tool, he attempted to express his political, spiritual, and humanistic concerns. Inspiration ranged from a particular moment in his life to events taking place on the world stage.

When Goodman began painting again a few years ago, he started with small landscapes and still-lifes. He soon discovered the daily painting movement where artists produce a small painting each day and post it on their website. He states, "While I never attempted to create seven paintings a week I did benefit from the discipline of painting on a frequent basis. By working small, I was able to take risks that I might not have taken with larger pieces. My overarching goal while creating these small pieces has been to become a better craftsman without diminishing the poetry. The title of the show comes from the fact I am not attempting to record an exact representation of a particular landscape. It is the lingering impression, the fleeting memory that I want to capture and hold onto as our lives speed by in time and space."

Goodman has exhibited widely in Vermont and teaches painting technique in the Burlington area. The Jackson Gallery exhibition will be on display through November 11, with a reception for the artist during Middlebury's ArtsWalk from 5 – 7 pm, Friday, October 12. Gallery hours are noon to 5 pm, Monday through Saturday, and one hour before each Town Hall Theater performance. Contact the Jackson Gallery at (802) 382-9222.
