THT Summer Film Series Screens E.T., 6/23

By:

Science fiction where it should be - on the big screen! This summer Town Hall Theater offers a cheap-ticket look at some of the best sci-fi films of all time.

The series coincides with THT's 2011-2012 Membership Drive: "Aliens Demand: Take Me To Your Theater!" The idea is played out in mailings and also on the building itself. Look carefully and you'll see that a flying saucer recently crashed into THT's bell tower, and a small alien is coming town a ladder to see the next show.

Apparently, Town Hall Theater is known throughout the galaxy, and aliens will travel many light years just to see a THT show.

The film series begins on Thursday, June 23, with Steven Spielberg's 1982 classic, E.T., THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL. It will be followed later in the summer by the 1953 cult film, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, and Spielberg's 1977 mega-hit, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.

Grown-ups who know and love these films might bring along some youngsters to introduce them to these astonishing films - on the big screen, the way they were originally shown.

As a bonus, all films will be preceded by silent sci-fi films from early in the 20th Century, or commentary from filmmakers that adds interesting information about the background of each film. On June 23rd, Aaron Morse will provide live accompaniment to the 1902 French short, A TRIP TO THE MOON. Filmmaker TIM JOy will talk about IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE on August 18, and will share selections from his own work. And NYC-based filmmaker Daniel Frye will talk about trends in contemporary sci-fi films on September 1, the final night of the series.

All this for just $3.

All screenings are on Thursday nights at 7 pm. Tickets may be purchased at THT's Box Office (382-9222) or at the door. The schedule:

June 23 E.T., THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL

August 18 IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE

September 1 CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND
