Submissions Open for the Neukom Institute Award for Playwriting

In an effort to understand, promote, and honor the convergence of art, science, and real life, the Neukom Institute for Computational Science at Dartmouth College is pleased to announce the establishment of the Neukom Institute Literary Arts Awards, a global award program to honor creative works around speculative fiction.

The inaugural awards will be announced in spring of 2018 in three categories honoring playwriting and established and first-time authors for literary fiction. Each award comes with a $5,000 honorarium. The award-winning play will be workshopped in July 2018 as a reading in Dartmouth Department of Theater's VoxFest followed by an additional workshop and reading in New Works Now, a new play festival at Northern Stage, a LORT-D theater in White River Junction, VT in January 2019. Plays should be written in response to the prompt: "What does it mean to be a human in a computerized world?"

"Given the pervasiveness of technology in our daily lives, not to mention a general jittery uncertainty about the state of the world, it's hardly surprising that bookstores and theaters are again overflowing with creative work exploring the ramifications of our newest scientific and technological advances," Professor Dan Rockmore, director of the Neukom Institute, writes in the Review of Books.

Submission Requirements:

Submissions must include a blind copy of the play, a resume/bio, a production history of the play and a one page statement of purpose that answers the following questions:

1. How does your play address the theme of exploring humanity in our computerized, digital world?

2. What are your goals for this play in its current form?

3. The winning play will receive two readings: one at VoxFest at Dartmouth College and the second in the New Works Now Festival at Northern Stage. How would you use this two-part development process to achieve these goals?

*Note that plays that have received a full production are not eligible for the competition.*

Playwrights can submit here: goo.gl/forms/SXxELu0wy2rDYOE03.

The award comes with an honorarium of $5,000.

**Deadline for submission, December 31, 2017.**
