In the Spring of 2009, Sandglass Theater invited Lyena Strelkoff to perform her solo show, Caterpillar Soup as part of our annual spring diversity theater series, Voices of Community. Lyena's performance, the story of her transformative journey after falling out of a tree and losing the use of her legs nine years ago, was a raw, honest and gripping tale. The community response was overwhelming.

Last year, Sandglass received a Community Fund Grant from the National Performance Network to bring Lyena back. Sandglass Theater's goal was to continue the conversations that began to emerge in 2009 as people spontaneously explored together the turns in their own life stories that were sparked by hearing hers. For the last several months, Sandglass has been meeting with interested community members to organize Lyena's two-week return visit which began last week with her repeat performance of Caterpillar Soup.

Lyena Strelkoff and Dean Purvis (her husband and collaborator) have been working in the community for the last week collecting stories from groups of people who chose to come together to share their own stories of healing, dealing and celebrating life in all its messiness. The small group gatherings are being facilitated by community volunteers and members of our planning team, including Cheryl Wilfong, Tony Barrand, Alicia Dana, Lise Sparrow, Jane Katz, Laura Lawson Tucker and Julianne Kaplan. Other members of the planning team include Ann Stokes, Claude Pepin, John Field and Burt Tepfer.

Lyena and Dean have been participating in these story circles and sharing parts of their own stories. Their primary role is to gather themes and images that they hear from others. At the end of the two weeks they will share what they have learned from us about our community's experiences. Healing, Dealing, and Transformation: Stories from Our Community Will take place on May 21, at 7:30 pm at The Friends Meeting House in Putney (across from Basketville). The performance has evolved in form, participants and content as the process unfolds. This special performance will draw on insights gathered from the different groups.

Some of the subjects explored in these groups:

· The spiritual dimension of their healing
· Being Doctors and Care Providers
· Living with a disability or chronic illness
· Family and friends of people who are living with a disability or chronic illness
· Participants in the Adult Theater Adventure Program at the New England Youth Theater
