Saint Michael's College Stages THE NOTEBOOK OF TRIGORIN 4/7-10
By: Gabrielle Sierra Mar. 17, 2010
The Notebook of Trigorin, called by The New York Times, Tennessee "Williams's unfinished symphony," will be staged by the Saint Michael's College theater department in the McCarthy Arts Center, Wednesday, April 7 through Saturday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. each evening. All performances are free and open to the public. Seating is not reserved.
Artistic jealousies, unrequited love and the fascination of a life in the theater, all collide in The Notebook of Trigorin by Tennessee Williams, a free adaptation of The Seagull by Anton Chekov. "Directing a script that blends the work of two masterful playwrights (Tennessee Williams and Anton Chekov) has been an incredible experience," said Director Cathy Hurst, associate professor of theater. "It's thrilling to work with a production team that makes bold, artistic choices."Peter Harrigan, SMC associate professor of theater, is designing costumes. John Devlin, associate professor of theater, is designing the set and lights. Matt Fitzgerald, a junior English major from Annapolis, Md., is designing sound. The New York Times describes "Notebook" as "Williams' unfinished symphony, or perhaps one of them, an eternal work-in-progress, begun late in life, as belated homage and search for spiritual connection." And that review said further, "For insights into the art and the life of an American master, who was possessed by the spirit of a Russian master, Notebook of Trigorin fascinates. Many theatergoers would not make an association between two disparate styles. Chekhov simmers. Williams, at his most popular, sizzles."MASHA - Natalie Budnyk of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
