FUNNY GIRL- the musical that made Barbara Streisand a superstar is coming to Middlebury's Town Hall Theater.

Funny Girl tells the story of comedienne Fanny Brice and her rise from the slums of New York to stardom in the Ziegfeld Follies. Along the way there's a stormy relationship with gambler Nicky Arnstein, the man who breaks her heart.

The Middlebury Community Players production is directed by Douglas Anderson. "I love this musical because it contains some of the best theater songs ever written, while the story is very touching and bittersweet," says Anderson. "It's everything I want a musical to be."

Playing the role of Fanny Brice is Kim Anderson, making her Middlebury debut. (No relation to director Anderson.) She has performed extensively in Burlington and Stowe. "Everyone remembers Streisand in the role, but Kim's take is all her own. I really think her madcap sense of humor is closer to Brice than Streisand's," says Anderson. "And her singing voice is sensational."

Musical director for the production is Lindi Bortney. Kendra Gratton choreographs, and Jerry Shedd conducts. Funny Girl is produced by Joann Langrock.

Tickets are already on sale for the musical, which opens on Thursday, November 17, with a special gala performance. That night a reception precedes the show at 6:30, and champagne and desserts will be served at intermission. Tickets for the gala are $35 and benefit Town Hall Theater.

Funny Girl will play a total of eight performances: November 17, 18, 19, 25 and 26 at 8 pm, with 2 pm matinees on November 20, 26 and 27. Tickets are $20 (except for opening night) and may be purchased at www.townhalltheater.org, 802 382-9222, or at the THT Box Office.
