Pacific Theatre Stages UNDERNEATH THE LINTEL, Now thru Jan 31
A globe-spanning mystery. A library book that's returned late is every librarian's pet peeve, but when that book is 113 years past due it goes from annoying to intriguing. This is how Pacific Theatre's presentation of Rosebud Theatre's production of Underneath the Lintel by Glen Berger begins.
The librarian in question is a reclusive Dutchman who has left his hometown but once in his life. When this 113 year overdue travel book lands in the overnight return slot, he sees the fine of a lifetime and the promotion he's been angling for dance before his eyes. The problem is the only name on the account is "A." and the address is a PO Box in China. With only scant clues to go off, this curious investigation quickly becomes an obsession that takes him around the world and through history to the ancient legend of the Wandering Jew.
"This show reminds me to see what lies beyond my comfort zone, that adventure could be waiting right around the corner from my next vulnerable decision," reflects actor Nathan Schmidt, last seen in Vancouver when he performed to rave reviews in Pacific Theatre's My Name is Asher Lev. "This librarian steps out from his dusty library and into the world and is rewarded with exuberant life. I hope I can be so brave. I'm excited to share that with Pacific Theatre."
Schmidt is a long-time company member with Rosebud Theatre in Rosebud, Alberta, one of Canada's only towns centered completely around a theatre institution. He is appearing directed by Paul Muir, also of Rosebud Theatre.
UNDERNEATH THE LINTEL by Glen Berger runs today, Jan 9-31, 2014, playing Wednesday-Saturday at 8pm, 2pm Saturday matinees at the Pacific Theatre, 1440 W 12th Ave (at Hemlock), Vancouver, BC. Tickets: $19.99-29.99 (not incl. taxes or fee). To book, visit pacifictheatre.org or call 604.731.5518.
