Sadler's Wells Announces Summer Festivals Programme

Sadler's Wells brings dance in all its forms out of the theatre and into the open air this summer, presenting a diverse programme of dance at a wide range of events and festivals around the UK. As well as returning to Latitude and Wilderness festivals in July and August, the season sees dancers perform across the capital on outdoor stages, presenting innovative new works and leading collaborative workshops from flamenco to lindy hop, free of charge to the public.
Latitude Festival
HENHAM PARK, SUFFOLK

Since 2008, Sadler's Wells has presented dance at Latitude to audiences in excess of 80,000 people across the years. Returning this summer to the festival for the 11th consecutive year, Sadler's Wells presents a varied programme of dance on the Waterfront Stage.
Highlights include Nomadis from the Birmingham-based Humanhood; Volume 1 by New Adventures Choreographer Award-winner Jamaal Burkmar, performed by his company Extended Play; and Used To Be Blonde, the new production from Sadler's Wells Associate Artist Sharon Eyal, performed by the National Youth Dance Company.
In an exclusive preview of their forthcoming show, Sylvia, co-produced by Sadler's Wells and The Old Vic and co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW, ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company combines dance, hip hop, soul and funk to shed new light on a remarkable story at the heart of the Suffragette movement.

Wilderness Festival

Sadler's Wells returns to Wilderness for the third consecutive year to present a programme of world-class dance and performance.
This year features Clowns by internationally acclaimed choreographer and Sadler's Wells Associate Artist Hofesh Shechter, performed by Shechter II for the first time as part of a UK and world tour. This darkly comic portrayal of a group of anarchic clowns combines the energy of a rock gig with beautiful, moving choreography.
Sadler's Wells also presents STACK, a playful and interactive dance-puzzle in the series of works People Make Patterns by choreographer Janine Harrington. Following ongoing interest in play, learning and coding, STACK proposes an environment in which five dancers and an audience meet in a real-time interactive situation.
Wilderness' ever-changing and progressive programme invites the best of the arts to join a diverse festival of music, dance, theatre and talks. The 2018 programme so far is available here.
FREE FESTIVALS
Cally Festival
Sunday 17 June
Sadler's Wells takes part in Cally Festival, presenting an exciting programme of dance as part of an annual celebration in Caledonian Road, one of London's most vibrant neighbourhoods.
Sadler's Wells co-hosts the Bus Stop Stage with dance academy Urdang, where students perform musical theatre and street dance by choreographer Neo, well known from Flawless.
The programme features a dance workshop organised by Family Fridays, Sadler's Wells' monthly dance class for young children and accompanying adults. La Escuela de Baile, the popular London-based flamenco school founded by Nuria García, offers a 30-minute workshop that takes participants through the basics of flamenco.
Sadler's Wells also showcases an interactive performance by The Flying Seagull Project, the troupe of entertainers who spread joy throughout the world through music, art, circus, dance and theatre, sending performing artists to hospitals, schools and communities around the world.

Soul in the City
Saturday 23 June
Sadler's Wells joins its local community at this annual festival of free activities, live music and arts and crafts, presenting Old Man Grooving, a group of five men aged 40 to 60 brought together by a shared love of dance.
Hosted in Andover Central Square by Islington Council, Tollington Parish and in partnership with many local organisations, Soul in the City aims to bring a diverse community together again.
National Theatre River Stage
Friday 27 - Sunday 29 July
Sadler's Wells makes its debut on the National Theatre River Stage, London's largest free outdoor arts festival, with a weekend of dance performances and family workshops ranging from hip hop to flamenco.
Breakin' Convention kicks off the festival with Freestyle Funk Forum, an hour of improvised theatre that is hip hop's answer to 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?'. Performances of dance, beatboxing, turntablism and rap are followed by impromptu dance workshops and a DJ set.
Saturday's programme features a wide range of family workshops, including yoga, lindy hop, and flamenco, as well as an inclusive ballroom workshop by Step Change Studios, who also perform excerpts from Fusion, the UK's first ballroom showcase for disabled and non-disabled dancers, which recently premiered at the Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler's Wells.
Vidya Patel & Shammi Pithia present their new work Converse for the first time, an extraordinary conversation between Kathak dance and contemporary music. In a journey of solos and duets, these artists connect with inherited traditions and emerging modernity.
Dotdotdot Dance, the UK-based flamenco dance company co-founded in 2014 by Magdalena Mannion, Noemí Luz & Yinka Esi Graves, present live music and a variety of works including When Viola Met Margas and Into Being, challenging conventional perceptions of flamenco with a contemporary approach and striking visual imagery.
Sunday includes a collaborative Let's Make a Dance workshop by Tim Casson's interactive dance performance The Dance WE Made; a performance by the Company of Elders, Sadler's Wells' inspirational resident company of over-60s performers; and Ceilidh Liberation Front, London's most radical ceilidh band.
River Stage runs from Friday 13 July to Sunday 12 August and all events are free. More details are available on the website.
Sadler's Wells participates in a range of events over the summer in east London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where plans are underway for the development of a fourth Sadler's Wells venue. Sadler's Wells East will be located on the Stratford Waterfront site, opposite the London Aquatics Centre, alongside new buildings for the BBC, UAL's London College of Fashion and the V&A, including a partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. The site will form part of a new cultural and education district, which will also include a major new UCL campus, and have direct links to the creative communities already based in east London.
The Great Get Together
Sunday 24 June
The Great Get Together is a nationwide event in partnership with the Jo Cox Foundation that celebrates connections and brings London's diverse communities together, inspired by the late Jo Cox MP.
Sadler's Wells takes part in a family-friendly programme of music and dance from around the world. The day features a range of performances and workshops from Breakin' Convention, the award-winning and critically acclaimed hip hop dance powerhouse that celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, from open mic sessions to live graffiti, alongside Tim Casson's interactive dance performance The Dance WE Made.
Based on Bawren Tavaziva's current production Izindava, Sadler's Wells also presents a moving female trio by Tavaziva Dance, communicating a universal message about human fragility within our changing world.
Open Doors: Vote 100
Sunday 22 July
Sadler's Wells joins its partners in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to host a day of free entertainment for the local community to commemorate 100 years of women's suffrage in the UK. Together with the BBC, UAL's London College of Fashion, V&A, Smithsonian Institution and UCL, Open Doors: Vote 100 will be the first event jointly devised by all partners, and features a diverse programme of performances, talks and activities in celebration of the centenary.
