SNOW WHITE AND THE HAPPY EVER AFTER BEAUTY SALON Comes to Ovalhouse

The classic fairytale Snow White is reinvented this Christmas in a joyous and irreverent new adaptation from acclaimed theatre-makers The Wrong Crowd. Set in a surprising 1950s beauty parlour, the production brims with The Wrong Crowd's trademark fusion of imaginative storytelling, stunning design and puppetry, and original music. For everyone and anyone aged six and over, the show is the first Christmas production that Ovalhouse has commissioned and co-produced.

Hannah Mulder, director of Snow White / Creative Associate, The Wrong Crowd: 'We are thrilled to be staging the story of Snow White in true Wrong Crowd style - re-imagining it in surprising ways and injecting Snow White with an agency and power that she and so many of other traditional female characters lack. Our Snow White has the ability to influence her own life and maybe even do some rescuing herself.'

In a 1950s fairytale wonderland, Snow is hard at work in her Aunt Trish's Beauty Salon, curling the three Little Pigs' tails, sharpening Big Bad's teeth and setting Prince Charming's quiff. But when she accidentally glances into the secret Magic Mirror, Aunt Trish sets out to destroy her niece forever. The only way Snow can survive is to head underground, where she makes seven new friends who are blind to her beauty.

Rachael Canning, designer and puppetry design/director for Snow White / Artistic Director, The Wrong Crowd: 'Snow White had us hooked with its themes of beauty and reflection and how this speaks to the world in which we live today. We are excited to set it against a 1950s backdrop, a moment when appearance became a priceless commodity as well as era with great music and dance. Along with some new Wrong Crowd collaborators, including writer Mike Akers and composer Tayo Akinbode, we are reinventing the tale for modern audiences. It's going to be packed with twists and toe-tapping tunes as well as some food for thought. We hope families and friends of all ages will go away full of joy and lively conversation.'

Owen Calvert-Lyons, Head of Theatre, Ovalhouse: 'We couldn't be more excited to have The Wrong Crowd here with Snow White, the first Christmas show we have co-produced. We want to make bold, fun and inventive productions which keep family audiences coming back year after year. But we also want to challenge some of the traditions which surround traditional Christmas productions. We love the inimitable, fun style that The Wrong Crowd always bring and the discussions that we know they'll provoke with this bold new version of Snow White.'
