Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais has withdrawn from the role of Elsa in The Royal Opera's forthcoming new production of Lohengrin, to ensure her full recovery from a routine abdominal medical procedure.

Kristine Opolais said: 'I withdraw from Lohengrin at the Royal Opera House with a heavy heart. I am incredibly sorry to disappoint my fans in London, but I look forward to returning to The Royal Opera in the 2018/19 Season as Tosca. I am extremely grateful for everyone's support.'

The role of Elsa will now be sung by Irish soprano Jennifer Davis.

Jennifer Davis was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme 2015-17, singing Euphrosyne/Lachesis (Orpheus), Nursing Sister (Suor Angelica), Ines (Il trovatore), Ifigenia (Oreste), Adina (L'elisir d'amore), Arbate (Mitridate, re di Ponto) and in the world premiere of 4.48 Psychosis for The Royal Opera, and in Les Enfants Terribles and Flight Pattern for The Royal Ballet. She returned earlier this Season to sing First Lady (Die Zauberflöte). She returns in the 2018/19 Season to sing Gretel (Hansel and Gretel) with The Royal Opera.

The rest of the cast remains the same, and includes Klaus Florian Vogt as Lohengrin, Christine Goerke as Ortrud, Thomas J. Mayer as Friedrich von Telramund, Georg Zeppenfeld as King Heinrich and Andris Nelsons conducting.
