Today the International Festival is excited to launch 2017 Virgin Money Fireworks Concert School Poster Competition. Now in its sixth year, the competition invites children from Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife to create colourful and imaginative designs that capture the spirit and excitement of this fantastic event.

The competition is supported by Fireworks Concert Broadcast partner Forth One, with Breakfast Show DJs Boogie and Arlene judging entries. They're looking for bold use of colours and shapes, as well as eye-catching effects which best represent the event, and will choose three winning designs which will be displayed on posters across Edinburgh this August.

The winning designs will be announced from a short-list at a special Fireworks Concert event held at the Virgin Money Lounge on Thursday 22 June. In addition to their work being seen throughout the city, in August winners will enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Fireworks set-up site at Edinburgh Castle and receive a family ticket to attend the concert in Princes Street Gardens.

Each year the Fireworks Concert marks the end of the city's August festival season and on Monday 28 August this year it promises to bring the 70th anniversary programme of the International Festival to a spectacular close. The world renownEd Scottish Chamber Orchestra will perform works by Tchaikovsky, Sir James MacMillan and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, choreographed to a spectacular display from fireworks specialists Pyrovision. Tchaikovsky's sumptuous ballet music forms the concert's centrepiece, while rousing Scottish masterpieces open and close the performance - James MacMillan's ceilidh-inspired Stomp will set the celebratory tone for the evening, while Peter Maxwell Davies' show-stopper An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise serves up a riotous folk-inspired ending to the evening.

The Virgin Money Fireworks Concert is one of Edinburgh's favourite annual events, bringing together families, visitors and communities from across the city and further afield, for the grand finale to Edinburgh's summer festival season. Over 400,000 fireworks choreographed to live orchestral music will light up the sky over Edinburgh against the unique backdrop of its iconic Castle. The event - the largest fireworks concert of its type in the world - is enjoyed annually by around 250,000 people at various vantage points across the Scottish capital and its surrounds.

The Virgin Money Fireworks Concert Primary School Poster Competition will close on Friday 9 June, and winners will be announced later that month. Full details of how to enter, as well as competition terms and conditions, can be found on the Edinburgh International Festival website eif.co.uk/virginmoneyfireworks.
