Centre Stage London Presents New Adaptation of LYSISTRATA

By: Oct. 30, 2017

This November Centre Stage London presents a musical adaptation of Aristophanes' Lysistrata. Updated to 1940s, wartime London this brand new adaptation features some wonderful wartime songs, with some jaunty twists and some jazz standards as you've never heard them before!

Newly adapted by Ellie Cahill specifically for Centre Stage, Lysistrata is a very funny, naughty piece of theatre. Cahill says "I've always been drawn to shows with very strong female leads and about the power of the individual. One of the most famous motifs within the original text is how it takes just one pull to unravel a piece of wool, in the same way that it takes just one person to make a difference. In this case- to end a war! I love how deeply funny it is; we always look back on ancient times thinking of them as having a level of refinement- this piece is bawdy and raunchy and just ends with a huge party, which I think is certainly how the Greek would have preferred to be remembered!"

Featuring an array of musical styles, Musical Director Max Fagandini says "We've tried to put together the perfect mix of songs that'll transport the audience back to those days while still having them rolling in the aisles with laughter - and in amongst some of those classics you might even find some hidden gems and a delightful surprise or two thrown in for good measure..."

It's the 1940s, wartime London. We meet Lysistrata as she gathers women around her from all walks of life, they have one aim; Peace. How will they achieve this? The women plan to force the men to sign a Peace Treaty by refusing to have sex with them until they do!

That's by no means to say they won't make things as 'hard' as possible to ensure they succeed; they will be teasing, they will be tempting but most importantly they will be working together to end the war.

In this original (and very naughty) battle of the sexes only one thing is sure: all is bare in love and war.
