A gripping and thought-provoking new play about a chance meeting between Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler in the afterlife is set to have its world premiere in Leeds in early July.

Churchill, the debut by Harrogate playwright Tony Tortora, will open at Upstairs @ The Carriageworks from the 2-20 July at 7.45pm before heading to London for a short run.

Winston Churchill has just died and gone to a place in the afterlife which a servant describes to him as a way-station en route to an unknown final destination. After a brief period alone, he is suddenly thrust together with his sworn enemy Adolf Hitler in a space neither can leave. There is unfinished business. Will each go any way to recognising the other's point of view? So the conversation begins.

The play is directed by Leeds theatre director and producer Richard Bonham. Richard's recent work includes Daniel Bye's The Price of Everything(which will be at this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe), Where's Your Mama Gone? (The Carriageworks, Leeds) and Matthew Bellwood's An Icy Man(West Yorkshire Playhouse as part of their Transform season). Richard is the Artistic Director of Sometimes We Play, and is currently working on devising a new play, We Can Be Heroes, in a production supported by The Lowry, Salford, Live Theatre Newcastle and Bradford Theatre in the Mill.

Bonham said about the new play "'We've been having an interesting time getting inside the heads of two of the most famous figures of the last century. There's so many twists and turns to their relationship. We can't wait to get the show in front of an audience and share this fascinating story with them'.

T The production runs at The Carriageworks, Leeds from 2-20July and will then visits the Arts Depot, London from 23-27 July.

Tickets for Churchill cost £12 (£10 concession) and can be purchased on 0113 224 3801 or online at http://www.carriageworkstheatre.org.uk/
