Ballast Theatre to Present MARRIAGE at Brockley Jack Studio Theatre, June 24-July 12

By:

Ballast Theatre is proud to present Marriage by Nikolai Gogol and adapted by Howard Coyler a tthe Brockley Jack Studio Theatre. The production will run Tuesday 24 June - Saturday 12 July at 7:45pm.

He wants to get married; and he doesn't want to get married - he doesn't know what to do. But he has a friend who knows what's best for everyone. Marriage is Gogol's absurd farce about desire, matchmakers, Imperial Russian speed dating and much else besides.

Nikolai Gogol was born on 01 April 1809 in a village in the Ukraine, and died on 04 March 1852 in Moscow. Despite his short life he wrote stories, plays and one novel that made him famous throughout the world, and his popularity endures. His work combines comedy, absurdity and tragedy, and he stands at the head of a vital strain of Russian literature.

His best known plays are The Government Inspector and Marriage, but many of his short stories have been adapted for the stage countless times as they are eminently theatrical.

Marriage has a running time of 90 minutes with no interval and is suitable for ages 14 and up. Tickets are £14, £11 concessions and can be purchased at www.brockleyjack.co.uk or by calling 0333 666 3366 (£1.50 booking charge for phone sales only).

Howard Colyer is a playwright and novelist. He has previously adapted Gogol's story, The Overcoat, which appeared at the Jack Studio in January, 2011; his adaptation of Diary of a Madman opens there in August this year and he is currently working on a new version of The Government Inspector. In addition his plays include: Flight (2014), Never Have I Seen Mount Fuji (2013), Mandrake (2013), Trojan Women (2013), Kafka v Kafka (2012), Finchley Road (2012), Homework (2011) and Conference Call (2011).

Director Scott Le Crass is an associate director at Omnibus, Clapham. He was a director on the Birmingham Rep's Foundry Programme in 2013, and assistant director on their Christmas Show, A Christmas Carol. Le Crass trained as an actor at Arts Ed, and has since directed and assisted on productions at a wide range of theatres including, the Jack Studio, Watford Palace, Riverside Studios, Oxford Playhouse, Theatre 503, Trafalgar Studios, The Old Red Lion and The Pleasance. He has previously directed four of Colyer's plays, Flight, Conference Call, Mandrake and Homework. He is also due to direct Diary of a Madman.
