telatulsa is proud to present Don Juan with original text by Jos Zorrilla, written and directed by Tara Moses. The show will run at Living Arts, November 7 16, 2019. Tickets are on sale now. The play is being presented as part of the Da de los Muertos Arts Festival hosted by Living Arts of Tulsa, Guthrie Green, and Casa de la Cultura.

In many countries around the world during Da de Muertos, the Spanish romantic-phantasmagoric-religious drama Don Juan Tenorio by Jose Zorrilla is performed. Writer and director Tara Moses, who is also the Artistic Director of telatulsa, has put a new spin on the classic tale. We cannot in good faith produce a show that celebrates a man who has assaulted women and hurt people then was redeemed for it, Moses said. When we view the classic story with our modern eyes, we see just how harmful machismo culture is. Don Juan has presented the perfect opportunity to change the narrative, introduce accountability, and give agency to Doa Ins and Doa Ana. Set in modern times, this new play has a powerful and poignant message supported by statistics, commentary from the Me Too Movement, and theatrical presentations of real, lived experiences with the classic sword-fighting and ballroom dancing as a fun added touch.

Emmanuel Lujano, who has been tasked to play the iconic Don Juan, added, To speak of Don Juan as an example of machismo in modern times exemplifies situations in which the selfishness of an individual negatively impacts the people around him. This show helps us understand how a bad attitude and a bad decision can lead us to disturbing situations. The cast also includes Maria Carmona Hernndez, Lorena Rivas, Eduardo Carmona Hernndez, Eduardo C. Mora, Alyssa Brown, and Manuel Gaytan.

Doors open an hour before each performance, so that audience members can peruse the gallery filled with educational materials about Dia de los Muertos and community altars, making for a special night at the theatre.

telatulsa, formerly known as Tulsa Latino Theater Company, is Tulsas only theatre company dedicated to creating evocative, Latinx and Native American-based work for diverse audiences.
