WHAT IT'S LIKE Premiering at The Theatre Centre September 2016

By:

what it's like, a new work from Adelheid's Artistic Director Heidi Strauss, brings audiences into a shared space to consider performance as an active platform to witness and experience experiments with comfort, agency, responsibility and complicity. Through movement and text, what it's like explores what brotherhood can really mean in a world so threatened by violence, fear and environmental degradation.

Performers and co-creators Michael Caldwell, Luke Garwood and Naishi Wang move through a series of shared spaces, embodying tensions between aggression and tenderness, applying game-related strategies, making and breaking pacts with one another and with the audience. The definitions of spatial, physical and personal boundaries are in constant flux. Through scenic design by Julie Fox, projection and sound design by Jeremy Mimnagh and lighting by Simon Rossiter, the shared space of the theatre is made constantly new, and those gathered are asked to renegotiate their relationship to their environment, and each other, throughout the performance.

what it's like is the culmination of a three-year residency at The Theatre Centre, and is featured as the first production of the inaugural "Dance Card" program, bringing together various dance companies from Toronto. adelheid is proud to open this dance season at The Theatre Centre with what it's like.

About adelheid: adelheid's movement-based work looks at interaction between different people and groupings of people, with a specific interest in the situation of performance and how we consider each other (audience & performer) within that construct. what it's like emerges from these core questions and brings adelheid's work to a new level of engagement with audiences. adelheid began in 2008 with Heidi Strauss and Jeremy Mimnagh; it's work has toured across Canada.
