Theatre De La Salle Drops Anchor in April with 65th Anniversary Revival of its First-Ever Musical!

Our ship has set sail and we'll be dropping anchor in April 2017 when Theatre De La Salle proudly presents Gilbert and Sullivan's THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE - the original swashbuckling blockbuster...with a twist!

Considered by many critics to be the funniest musical of all-time, this enduring classic was the first-ever musical production performed on the De La Salle stage back in 1952.

65 years later, this revival of The Pirates of Penzance sees the return of last year's audience favourites Calum Slapnicar as the Pirate King and Max Gibson as the Major General, alongside Chris Hajjar as the Sergeant of Police. Nicholas De Souza and Emily Grydziuszko sing the roles of the young lovers, Frederic and Mabel, with Grade 10 newcomers Savanna La Selva and Fionn MacCready hoisting their pirate flags as Ruth and Samuel.

In early October, members of the cast climbed aboard the 165-foot Kajama Tall Ship in Toronto's harbour for a photo shoot and afternoon sail to promote the musical.

The story revolves around young pirate apprentice, Frederic who, on his 21st birthday, is released from his apprenticeship to buccaneers and falls madly in love with Mabel, the Major-General's daughter. But when Frederic discovers he was born on February 29 and only has a birthday each leap year, he realizes he is indentured to the pirates for another six decades!

A swashbuckling farce of brilliant humour and razor-sharp wit, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance makes for the perfect night out. Chock-full of memorable melodies, it includes the famous tongue-twisting patter song from the "modern" Major-General and the cowardly Police Sergeant's 'When a felon's not engaged in his employment'.
