Nightwood Theatre Presents GRACE

Exquisitely told in a stunning blend of documentary theatre, striking visual projections and choreography, Grace is a searing piece that ignites a discussion on the failures and limitations of the legal system. "There was no justice, there was just a legal outcome." In the wake of a young woman's disclosure of childhood sexual assault, a family presses charges. A true story about survival, hope, and the pursuit of justice at a time when provability still usurps truth in our courtrooms.

From having first developed the piece through Nightwood Theatre's Write From The Hip play development program, we are deeply proud to present the World Premiere of Grace. "In the #MeToo era, Grace instigates a brutally honest and pertinent discussion about the failure of our legal system by reframing the conversation to involve our lawmakers," says Kelly Thornton, Artistic Director of Nightwood Theatre.

SYMPOSIUM - January 12, 2019

In conjunction with our production of Grace, Nightwood Theatre will present a symposium on Saturday, January 12th from 4pm-6pm, onstage at Streetcar Crowsnest. Free to attend. The symposium will consist of two panels: one on the challenges and failures of the legal system faced by survivors of sexual assault, with guest speakers Judge Donna Hakett, prosecutor Jill Witkin, Megan Savard and Deepa Mattoo, and moderated by Christine McGoey; and another on the psychology of memory. This symposium is presented through Nightwood Theatre's Community Engagement Program, generously sponsored by TD Bank.

As Canada's foremost feminist theatre, Nightwood provides an essential home for the creation of extraordinary theatre by women. Founded in 1979, Nightwood Theatre has created and produced award-winning plays that have garnered Dora Mavor Moore, Chalmers, Trillium and Governor General's awards.
