New Canadian Play C'MON ANGIE! Comes to The Assembly Theatre Image

Following its critically acclaimed world premiere at Vancouver's Touchstone Theatre, the first Toronto production of the gripping new drama, C'mon Angie! by Amy Lee Lavoie will be presented by Leroy Street Theatre and The Spadina Avenue Gang.

In the pre-dawn hours following a one-night stand, Angie and Reed spend a fraught morning confronting questions related to intimacy, consent, and sexual assault. As the two characters uncover the truth of what happened the night before, a major gap between their understanding of the situation-- and the meaning of consent-- is revealed. Told with humour, heart, and unflinching honesty, C'mon Angie! dramatizes a difficult and all-too familiar situation, resulting in what the Vancouver Sun calls, "a thoughtful and provocative contribution to one of the most compelling issues of our time."

Staged at The Assembly Theatre, the new production will unite indie theatre artists from three major cities across the country. The Vancouver-based playwright's work will be directed by Montreal-based director Cristina Cugliandro (artistic director, Odd Stumble Theatre) and will feature two Toronto-based actors, Dora-nominated Anne van Leeuwen (artistic director, Leroy Street Theatre) and the multi award-winner, Ryan Hollyman (resident artist, ARC Stage). The production will feature costumes designed by Dora Award winner, Lindsay Dagger Junkin (Jerusalem, Outside the March), and lighting design by Chin Palipane (Gruesome Playground Injuries, Leroy Street).

Amy Lee Lavoie is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada's Playwriting Program. Her plays include Rabbit Rabbit (Infinitheatre, MECCA winner for Best Text and the Revelation Award), Me Happy (co-written with Matthew Mackenzie, Summerworks), Stopheart (Factory Theatre) and Genetic Drift (Pi Theatre/Boca del Lupo).

Since taking up residency in Parkdale, Leroy Street Theatre has regularly produced sold-out productions, including George F. Walker's The Chance, and Kill the Poor. The Spadina Avenue Gang has co-produced new works with the Storefront Theatre (Tough Jews, Dora nomination - Outstanding Production), Unit 102 (Miss), and One Four One Collective (Anywhere, Patron's Pick, Toronto Fringe; Best of Fringe).

C'mon Angie! is a thrilling, timely, and exceedingly human play that the Georgia Straight calls, "visceral, important, life-changing theatre." Featuring a stellar cast and creative team, the Toronto premiere production promises to be a must-see event of the Spring theatre season.
