Former Stratford Shakespeare Festival artistic director David William has died at the age of eighty-four, CBC News reports.  The Stratford Festival stated that he died of a head injury from a fall.

The Festival's general director, Antoni Cimolino, said, "David made an enormous contribution to the festival that spanned many decades...He directed a great deal of Shakespeare at Stratford, and became Canada's go-to director for Shakespeare's contemporaries, the Restoration and the Greeks. His work was characterized by a precision and intelligence that made the most challenging classical text enjoyable to all audiences."

William worked with the Festival for seventeen years and was artistic director from 1990 to 1993.  His directing credits with the Festival included TWELFTH NIGHT, VOLPONE, and KING LEAR.  He also produced Canadian plays such as MEMOIR and FOREVER YOURS, MARIE-LOU, Festival artistic director Des McAnuff said.

Before his career with the Stratford Festival, William worked as a director in London and was artistic director of the New Shakespeare Company.
