Amicus Productions Presents PRELUDE TO A KISS, 4/12-21

Prelude to a Kiss, which has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, and Drama Desk award, tells the story of Peter and Rita, a couple who have fallen in love, despite Rita's pessimistic outlook on life. Shortly after their wedding, the strength of their love and commitment to each other is tested when Rita’s receives a kiss from an old man, causing their souls to be exchanged. While honeymooning, Peter Gradually realizes that the woman by his side is not his wife and must track down the old man to free his young love's spirit trapped in an aging and diseased body before it's too late.

When Prelude to a Kiss premiered in 1990 it was thought by many to be a symbol of AIDS. Whether this was in fact Lucas’s intention or not, it could be agreed upon that while the themes explored in this play are grounded in that epidemic, they also speak to mankind in general. Lucas’ exploration of the limits that can be found within love and what it really means to be committed to someone are things in which everyone can relate.

The play features Ted Powers as Peter Hoskins, Kat Karpenchuk as Rita Boyle, Derek Dorey as The Old Man, Donald G. Baker as Dr. Boyle/Tom, and Laura Wilde as Mrs. Boyle. The wedding party is rounded out by Elizabeth Stinson as Aunt Dorothy, Stephen McLarty as Taylor, Jan Harvey as Leah, Paul Barker as Uncle Fred and Michael Primo as the Minister /Waiter. The play is directed by Nicholas Banks, who is new to Amicus but not new directing having directed many productions for Sir William Mulock Secondary School and Keswick High School as well as The Dining Room and Blood Brothers for Theatre Aurora.

Amicus is on its 33nd year of entertaining audiences and providing their members with the opportunity to share in the process of creating theatre. Volunteers are always welcome. Subscriptions to their 2012/2013 season which includes Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, an adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher, Apartment 3A, a comedy by Jeff Daniels, and The Voysey Inheritance, adapted by David Mamet are available for $48 for a standard subscription, $42 for seniors and $36 for students.
