AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY Opens in Toronto

By:

August: Osage County had its official opening night in Toronto on November 5th, 2009 and the show is proving to be quite the hit. The National Tour, starring Academy Award winner Estelle Parsons as the head of the dysfunctionAl Weston family, has been a success all over the US and graces the Toronto stage for only ten short days.

Written by Tracy Letts and directed by Anna D. Shapiro, this play tells the story of the Westons, a large family that comes together in their Oklahoma home when the patriarch disappears. They are left to deal with unspoken truths and astonishing secrets, all the while dealing with the pill-popping matriarch Violet (Estelle Parsons) being in the centre of all the drama that unfolds. The play runs over three hours long, with two intermissions, and touches on many difficult subjects, including drug abuse, suicide, alcoholism, racism, infidelity, aging, incest and love.

August: Osage County got its start when it was produced by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, and then began performances on Broadway on October 30th, 2007 at the Imperial Theatre. It closed after 648 performances and launched what is turning into a very successful National Tour. The play is also loved by critics, having won a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for Best Play as well as the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Critics are already singing its praises, with Lynn Slotkin of CBC Radio proclaiming it "Exhilarating! Brilliant! If you love theatre, you cannot miss this!" and AM 740's Michael Englebert is calling it "the highlight of the 2009 Toronto theatrical season!" Currently playing at the Canon Theatre, August: Osage County is only in town until November 15th, so get your tickets soon for a chance to see this remarkable piece of theatre during its only Canadian stop.
