Independent Shakespeare Co. Awarded California Arts Council Local Impact Grant

The California Arts Council announced its plans to award $18,000 to Independent Shakespeare Co. as part of its Local Impact program.
The Local Impact program fosters equity, access, and opportunity by providing project and partnership support for small arts organizations with operating budgets under $1 million. All projects extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations that have limited access to the arts.
With support from the California Arts Council, Independent Shakespeare Co. (ISC) will present the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival 2017. Los Angeles will come together for live performances, education workshops, salon discussions and local opening acts. All presented admission free June 24 - September 3, Wednesdays to Sundays at the Old Zoo in Griffith Park. This season ISC will present 49 performances of William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure and The Two Gentleman of Verona.

With their support, not only do we bring theater to Angelenos who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to experience it, but we strive to more tightly knit together all Angelenos who make up the fabric of the city."
Independent Shakespeare Co. is one of just 130 grantees chosen for this highly competitive program, which received applications from 203 organizations statewide. "The Local Impact program eliminates barriers keeping low-income, rural, and historically underserved communities from equal access to arts programs," said Donn K. Harris, Chair of the California Arts Council. Independent Shakespeare Co.'s project helps to further the Arts Council's vision of enriching the lives of all Californians through arts participation, while allowing the local community to access their own creativity."
