THE CLIMBING TREE Comes to Riverside Theatres From 22nd to 24th November, a beautiful new work for young people, The Climbing Tree by Rachael Coopes, will take to the stage at Riverside Theatres.

The Climbing Tree examines what lies beneath the surface in a regional town. Part play, part ghost story and part musical, it celebrates a town with an extraordinary history seen through the eyes of characters that are just finding their feet.

The story follows four teenagers connected one day by an unexpected incident. There's nothing revolutionary in their actions, nothing extraordinary in their lives. However, something goes wrong and one of them is forced to answer questions that could affect the rest of her life and everyone else's.

Many of these questions have been asked before in this place, answered by people her age, but their experiences are different. The slow singing of time has seen it play out in so many ways. This is a town of ghosts. Sometimes they are a comfort but usually they just make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.

Over three years, The Climbing Tree was developed by the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre in partnership with Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), and with extensive community consultation. Playwright Rachael Coopes and composer Guy Webster were part of the creative force behind ATYP's multi-award winning Sugarland.

Director Stephen Champion said, "After three years of development we are finally about to share The Climbing Tree with the world. We are very excited to see how these rich regional stories affect an audience and we hope they spark a lot of thought and discussion."
