New Theatre Presents the Sydney Premiere of STUPID F---ING BIRD By Aaron Posner An aspiring young director rages against the art created by his mother's generation. A young actress vies with an aging Hollywood star for the affections of a renowned novelist. And everyone discovers just how disappointing love, art, and growing up can be.

This irreverent and hilarious remix of Chekhov's The Seagull, complete with songs, pitches young against old, past against present, to ask the age-old question: how far will we go in pursuit of happiness?

Angsty, raw, and real, American playwright Aaron Posner's clever update asks the big questions about what it means to be a creative artist.

While honoring the spirit of Chekhov's original, this tale of unrequited love, missed opportunities and lost dreams is bitingly contemporary, tantalizing and engaging, revealing the danger in our own desires.

New Theatre is thrilled to be presenting the Sydney premiere of this wonderful play, with NIDA MFA Directing graduate Warwick Doddrell making his New Theatre directorial debut.

"Posner has brought a contemporary language to the stage with incredible authenticity, examining a world of social media, instant gratification and expectation - where there are set paths laid in the stone for us to follow," says Warwick.

"The play is a fast-paced, funny and deeply painful revelation of the longing at the heart of the contemporary west," he continues. "There's a rollicking loose energy and a sense of impatience, of 'get-on-with-it' embedded within the piece, but it's also very open and honest in its investigation of the creative life."

Warwick has assembled a terrific team of young creatives to bring this very funny play to life. The design team includes Jeremy Allen (set & costume design The Readers, Belvoir Street, 4:48 Psychosis, Old Fitz; Between the Streetlight and the Moon, KXT; set design Proof, New Theatre) and Ellen Stanistreet (set & costume design American Beauty Shop, KXT; costume design Home Invasion, Old 505).

The cast includes Annie Stafford (NIDA 2016), Megan Smart (WAAPA 2016; Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Mad March Hare/Old Fitz), Mansoor Noor (Belleville, Mad March Hare/Old Fitz; Visiting Hours, KXT), and returning to New Theatre Lloyd Allison-Young (The Lieutenant of Inishmore) and Brendan Miles (Silent Disco, The Chapel Perilous, The Cherry Orchard).
