The Sheldon presents the Red Clay Ramblers, Friday, May 6, 2011 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. Now in their 38th year, the Tony Award-winning Red Clay Ramblers are a North Carolina string band whose repertoire reflects their roots in old-time mountain music, as well as bluegrass, country, rock, New Orleans jazz, gospel and the American musical.

The Ramblers long-term association with theatrical and musical success has not only led them to a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Music in a Play and a special Tony Award for Fool Moon, but has included numerous theatre productions and musical collaborations. Over the years, the Ramblers have performed with such figures as Grammy Award winner Shawn Colvin, Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, Eugene Chadbourn, Ireland 's Boys of the Lough, Randy Newman and Michelle Shocked. All along, members of the Ramblers have been involved separately in diverse creative projects, including children's works for the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and the celebratory Carolina musicals King Mackerel, Cool Spring and Tar Heel Voices.

The Red Clay Ramblers have been guests numerous times on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion and have appeared nationally with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show, Harry Smith's This Morning, and Candice Bergen's AM-America. They have toured extensively in North America and in Europe, and have made four USIA concert tours to eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East . The Ramblers' latest CD, Old North State, released October 2009, has been referred to as "North Carolina culture at its best."
