Dave Brubeck returns with his quartet of acclaimed musicians including Randy Jones, drums; Bobby Militello, saxophone and flute; and Michael Moore, bass on Sunday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall.

Combining complex rhythms, tones and key signatures with a West Coast Cool sound, Dave Brubeck has long been proof that creative and popular jazz can be synonymous. A favorite with critics and fans alike, Brubeck has been redefining jazz music for over 50 years, since his days with General Patton's Army Band during WWII. He is credited as a force in rebirth of jazz in the 1950s and '60s, taking the popular Dave Brubeck Quartet on tour with greats such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, and composing standards such as "Take Five," now featured in the Grammy Hall of Fame, and "Blue Rondo A La Turk."

The youngest of three musical brothers, Dave Brubeck was born in Concord , California in December 1920. Brubeck wanted to follow in his father's footsteps as a cattle rancher, but his mother was a pianist and music teacher, and the lure of music, especially jazz, drew him to the piano and local dance bands. He began playing professionally by his early teens, but enrolled in college as a pre-med student with the idea of becoming a veterinarian and returning to the ranch. However, after working his way through school as a jazz pianist, Brubeck soon decided to change his college major to music.

Over his long career Dave Brubeck has recorded with legendary jazz figures Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Rushing and Carmen McRae, as well as current jazz pioneers Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman and Christian McBride. His musical contributions over the past half century as both a pianist and composer have been honored by a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1996, and induction to the International Jazz Hall of Fame. The recipient of six honorary doctorates, a Jazz Master's Award, a star on Hollywood 's Walk of Fame, the National Medal of Arts, and a Kennedy Center honoree title in 2009, Dave Brubeck remains one of music's most honored and best-loved artists. As a legend and jazz icon, his joy in performing and daring improvisations continue to challenge and excite new generations of musicians and listeners.
