DANCING AT LUGHNASA Plays In Emerson Studio Theater 4/8-12

By:

Webster University's Conservatory of Theatre Arts presents the award-winning play, "Dancing at Lughnasa," by Brian Friel, April 8-12 in the Loretto-Hilton Center's Emerson Studio Theatre, 130 Edgar Road. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m., except Sunday, which will have a 2 p.m. matinee only. Admission is $12 for the general public and $6 for senior adults and students. For ticket reservations, call the Fine Arts Hotline at 968-7128.

Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play in 1992 and Britain's Olivier Award in 1991, "Dancing at Lughnasa" is the touching and lyrical tale of five unmarried sisters who yearn for a life beyond their simple existence. Set in the late 1930's in a small Irish village during the festival of Lughnasa, the Celtic god of the harvest, the sisters find sporadic joy and release through brief colorful bursts of dancing to music emanating from the radio, which is their only link to the romance and hope of the world at large, and their only break from a life of poverty and deadening routine. "Dancing at Lughnasa" is a memory play told by the now-mature narrator who recalls life with his aunts and mother when he was a seven-year-old boy.

"Dancing at Lughnasa" is directed by senior directing major Shelley Carter.
