Mahler wrote the music and, 70 years later, Luchino Visconti put images to it. It was Death in Venice that popularised Mahler’s Fifth, a monumental and intense work that goes far beyond its famous Adagietto.

Program

For Mahler, writing a symphony was “building an entire world”. With the Fifth he achieved it, but he kept revising it up until a few months before his death. The result was one of the most spectacular and grandiose works in European symphonic music. If today there is no doubt that the piano is the king of instruments, much of the credit or blame lies with Franz Liszt, who with his virtuosity and his works brought the instrument to unimaginable heights, as shown by his Concerto No. 2. Granados saw his dreams destroyed at the age of 48, just when he had the greatest desire to continue writing music, spurred on by the success of Goyescas in New York. An unfortunate battle between British and German forces during the First World War caused his death 100 years ago, when the ship on which he was sailing was torpedoed. We remember his most international symphonic work, written just a few weeks before his death: Intermezzo from Goyescas.
