FUGARD AT THE FUGARD Seminar Set for Open Book Festival Today

The Fugard Theatre is proud, once more, to play host and hub to this year's Open Book Festival. One of the major highlights of this year's festival is a seminar with Athol Fugard, South Africa's most famous playwright and the theatre's namesake.

In FUGARD AT THE FUGARD, Athol Fugard reflects on his writing career with Mannie Manim at the launch of DIE LAASTE KARRETJIEGRAF, a production which enjoyed its world premiere earlier this year at the Fugard Theatre.

Born in 1932, Fugard is not only a playwright, although he is best known for his political plays protesting apartheid in South Africa, but also a novelist, actor and director. His plays include HELLO AND GOODBYE, MASTER HAROLD... AND THE BOYS and BOESMAN AND LENA, as well as SIZWE BANZI IS DEAD and THE ISLAND, which earned him and his co-writers John Kani and Winston Ntshona a Tony Award nomination for Best Play in 1975. His novel TSOTSI was transformed into an Academy Award-winning film by Gavin Hood in 2005 and, in 2011, Fugard earned a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. He is still active in the theatre, with his recent plays including EXITS AND ENTRANCES, THE TRAIN DRIVER and THE BLUE IRIS.
