Blog series chronicling the experience of 'Broadway in South Africa' during their 2010 trip to South Africa.
Well hello everyone!! Today was quite the day. We started off at 9 am . . . well I started off at 9 am ;) I had a breakfast at the breakfast nook which included some cereal and delicious coffee which I desperately needed since I stayed out a little late the night before. We went on a long drive which was narrated by a surprise guest Abraham on the very LOUD microphone. We talked about the scenery and random fun facts like where the first heart transplant was. . . but anyways . . . we also discussed District 6 where all the blacks and coloreds were moved during the apartheid regime. Now the good part: BABOONS!! They were all over the street and we were informed that they will attack you, steal your backpack, open it, throw everything in it on the ground and run into the hills. I still think they just wanted me to hug them but everyone said no, so fine I didn't do it. Next we saw an ostrich and learned that the black ostrich is male and the grey ones are women. I asked if he could arrange an elephant to walk across the street, but he just laughed so I guess he doesn't know any.So we went to the Cape of Good Hope to see the ocean and it was breathtaking. We had an amazing meal overlooking False Bay and all forgot sunscreen and got ridiculously burnt!!
Then we went to camp to start our second day of teaching. It's amazing how grown up the kids are since last year. I feel much more connected because I know them all already and can truly appreciate their progress. Chris gave an amazing pep talk at the beginning of camp which he discussed discovering new things about oneself everyday. He talked about how special everyone is and how when they really look inside themselves they can find their individuality which makes them an even more essential part of the group. He also talked about being a leader and being supportive to all your fellow group members. It was a great day!!! I am now really sunburnt and need a good sleep so I can start tomorrow with a fresh perspective, an abundance of energy and a new lesson plan.
