An exceptionally talented Buddhist nun with a pure and strong voice, Ani Choying Drolma has become a sensation all around the world since her first exposure to the audiences outside of Nepal in 1998 when she toured across several US cities. Her first album featuring the ancient Chö songs of Himalayas was published the year before and gained overwhelming popularity. Since then, Ani Choying has recorded 13 albums, was featured in a movie soundtrack and has performed at countless festivals and stages.
Born to a family of Tibetan exiles living in Kathmandu, Nepal, she joined Nagi Gompa Buddhist nunnery at the age of 13 where she received not only spiritual training but also an education in Buddhist meditation, chants, rituals and ceremonies under supervision of the renowned meditation master, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. With her fantastic voice and natural, intuitive talent for singing, she quickly advanced to the position of the resident chant master in the nunnery.
A young nun already in love with singing, her relationship with music took a whole different turn when American guitarist Steve Tibbetts, who was a visitor to the monastery, had a chance to listen to her. The Recordings that Tibbets made became the foundation of her albums, bringing her singing to the global audiences. Committed selflessly to the improvement of educational and development opportunities for Tibetan nuns and with the income generated through her musical activities, she finances the Arya Tara School, which she founded in 2000.
Accompanied on the guitar by Steve Tibbets and on percussions by Marc Anderson, Ani Choying Drolma presents the age-old melodies of Buddhist chants and hymns with a delicate mix of modern sounds. Infused with the messages of love, kindness and compassion, her heavenly voice invites audiences to contemplate the insubstantial nature of all things in a musical experience transcending the ordinary.
