Children's Theatre Company presents The Hobbit, based on the beloved novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, running from March 12 through April 14, 2019, adapted for the stage and directed by Greg Banks, with music by Thomas Johnson. The cast for this new, nimble ensemble play includes Joy Dolo (Gandalf, Bombur, Troll, Gollum, Elven King, Ensemble), H. Adam Harris (Kili, Troll, Smaug, Ensemble), Becca Hart (Balin, Troll, Bard, Ensemble), Acting Company member Dean Holt (Bilbo Baggins), and Acting Company Member Reed Sigmund (Dwalin, Thorin, Spider, Ensemble) with Victor Zupanc and Bill Olson as the onstage musicians. Then (SURPRISE!) a racing, romping foretaste of the musical fun to follow. It's the utterly delicious overture to Giochino Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri-The Italian Girl in Algiers. It's another bright success in Winter Opera's long list of delights.

California Shakespeare Theater opens its 2018 Season with the World Premiere of Quixote Nuevo, a music-filled, contemporary retelling of Miguel de Cervantes' classic Spanish novel Don Quixote. Celebrated Latino playwright Octavio Solis takes us on a journey to the fictional modern-day border town of La Mancha, Texas, where an aging Don Quixote loses himself in stories of chivalrous escapades and embarks on a quest of imagination, adventure, and Tejano music. Quixote Nuevo, directed by acclaimed documentary playmaker KJ Sanchez making her Cal Shakes debut, will feature Emilio Delgado, best known for his long-running role as Luis on Sesame Street, in the title role, and a cast of Latinx actors from the Bay Area and beyond. Set in present day Hollywood, this production is presented by Pocket Universe, the company behind last summer's Julius Caesar set in an all girls' high-school.
