York Theatre Company
Theater at St. Jean's 150 East 76th Street New York, NY 10021
Based on the book The Rothschilds by Frederic Morton, Harnick and Bock's musical shares the story of a courageous European family who rise from poverty to riches while fighting anti-Semitism, and risk their fortune to win freedom for their oppressed people. This work was the last collaboration between Bock and Harnick. The musical ran on Broadway in 1970 for over 500 performances and was nominated for nine Tony Awards. It garnered Best Actor and Featured Actor awards for Hal Linden and Keene Curtis, respectively.
No longer a two-act production, the plot unfolds in a streamlined, 100-minute musical without intermission. The story is told from the perspective of the mother, not from an oppressive outsider, as in previous versions. A deeper conflict between Mayer Rothschild and Nathan emerges, replacing Nathan's lengthy English romance.
