On January 13 and 14 at 7:30 PM, guest conductor Mark Wigglesworth returns to the Abravanel Hall stage to lead the Utah Symphony in a repertoire of classical favorites. Internationally-acclaimed guest pianist Francesco Piemontesi makes his Utah Symphony debut performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 27. Maestro Wigglesworth will also conduct a symphonic suite from Henk de Vlieger's orchestral compilation of music from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde.

On January 6 and 7 at 7:30 PM, Music Director Thierry Fischer conducts the first Utah Symphony performance of 2017 with Tchaikovsky, Ives, and Webern. Tchaikovsky's famous violin concerto will be performed by guest artist Noah Bendix-Balgley in his Utah Symphony debut. Utah Symphony's performance cycle of Charles Ives' symphonies continues with Symphony No.2, joining Brahms and Beethoven as three complete composer cycles programmed on the O.C. Tanner Company Masterworks Series this season. Webern's Variations for Orchestra rounds out the program with a later work inspired by nature. Tickets start at $21 ($15 for students), and can be purchased at www.utahsymphony.org or by calling (801) 533-6683.

The South Bend Civic Theatre recently opened their new show, It's a Wonderful Life, for the holiday season under the direction of Jewel Abram-Copenhaver. Being one of the most classic stories of all time, SBCT really put on all the bells and whistles to make this show a spectacular piece of Christmas theatre. There were a few details that were outstandingly done in this rendition of an ageless show; these few things really made SBCT's version of It's a Wonderful Life one of the better ones I've seen.

Casting Announced for American Ballet Theatre's Performances of The Nutcracker at Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Casting for American Ballet Theatre's The Nutcracker, co-presented by Segerstrom Center for the Arts and ABT, was announced today by Kevin McKenzie, ABT Artistic Director and Terry Dwyer, Segerstrom Center President. Choreographed by ABT Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky, The Nutcracker will be given 12 performances at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, December 9-18, 2016. The Nutcracker, set to music by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky, features choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, scenery and costumes by award-winning designer Richard Hudson and lighting by Jennifer Tipton. The Pacific Symphony performs the beloved holiday score. In the Los Angeles Times review from last year's inaugural Center performance, it declared, "Choreographer Alexei Ratmansky has made his own Christmas miracle: a joyful 'Nutcracker' ballet that is ravishing and clever enough to inspire multiple viewings."

Music Director Thierry Fischer leads the Utah Symphony and Utah Symphony Chorus prepared by Dr. Barlow Bradford in Prokofiev's remarkable cantata, “Alexander Nevsky” with the help of Russian mezzo-soprano Alisa Kolosova and the University of Utah Choirs on November 18 and 19 at 7:30 PM at Abravanel Hall. The all-Prokofiev program will also feature the composer's Symphonic Suite from the film, “Lieutenant Kijé” – both the cantata and suite will be recorded live for later release. Also on the program, Utah Symphony Concertmaster Madeline Adkins will make her Utah Symphony concerto debut in a performance of Prokofiev's Concerto No. 2 for Violin.
