From attending the New Theatre 2015 season launch, it is clear from Artistic Director Louise Fischer's introduction that New Theatre is a "family" with a passion for what they create. The 2015 line up continues the company's legacy of staging productions that will challenge ideas and discuss issues, and even the plays that were written in other eras remain relevant to the current society.

Every year, despite a litany of warnings they come to the Big Apple with big dreams. Warnings like: “You have to pay your dues.” “It's a tough business, kid.” “How are you going to survive?” There's no such thing as an overnight success, yet still they come to be at “the top of the heap,” as Kander and Ebb so eloquently put it. The four young performers featured here haven't yet vaulted to the top of the cabaret heap, but they've certainly made their marks with excellent shows during 2014, while exhibiting the potential to get there. The spotlight is already shining on Chrysten Peddie, Angela Dirksen, Rembert Block, and Kristoffer Lowe.

The S.E.M. Ensemble returns to Paula Cooper Gallery for the American premiere of American/Czech composer Petr Kotik's Master-Pieces (2014). The staged, 60-minute chamber opera features a libretto by Kotik, based on writings by Gertrude Stein and adapted to the stage by director Michael Rau. Commissioned by the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in collaboration with New Opera Days Ostrava (NODO), Czech Republic, Master-Pieces received its world premiere at NODO last June. The opera marks Kotik's return to Stein's rhythmic, poetic prose, after Many Many Women and There is Singularly Nothing, both composed in the 70's.

Mary Jane and friends are coming to town! TUTS Underground is taking you on a hilarious, psychedelic journey through Reefer Madness, Sept. 25 - Oct. 5 in Zilkha Hall at The Hobby Center. Inspired by the classic 1936 anti-marijuana propaganda film, this tongue-in-cheek musical follows the hysterical downward spiral that arises when a group of clean-cut kids fall prey to the dreaded marijuana, and we're here to tell you who those crazy kids are.

'Beach reading' usually means paperback, possibly serious but not too, and above all, a page-turner. We have some suggestions for the beach, or wherever:

Dear Bookworks Bookworm,
I read a book this month that I had every intention of liking, but didn't. It had a story line that interested me but the characters were one dimensional and flat and the writing that was not worth writing home about. Rather than review a book that disappoints, I decided to review a movie that I had just seen with Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche, Words and Pictures. This is a movie well worth the ticket price. It is always a pleasure seeing a movie where actors do what they should be doing best, acting and where writers are doing what they should be doing best, writing.

Following a successful opening week of Festival 2013, Dance Theatre of Harlem returns with an all-new program. DTH gave its first professional performance at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in 1970; since that date, DTH and the Pillow have enjoyed a longstanding and fruitful artistic relationship. The company, led by Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, performs Donald Byrd's smooth yet power-packed contemporary ballet Contested Space, which features a plethora of solos and duets. past-carry-forward, created for DTH by Tanya Wideman-Davis and Thaddeus Davis, conveys the spirit and significance of the Harlem Renaissance. The cornerstone of this dynamic evening is the late choreographer Ulysses Dove's moving, elegiac ballet Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven, danced to "Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten" by Arvo Part. The company appears in a special seven-show engagement in the Ted Shawn Theatre at Jacob's Pillow, July 9-13.

When it comes to social dating apps, Grindr is one of the most ubiquitous. While not the first, it definitely shook up the world of digital dating, and has earned several different reputations for itself. Naturally, it is ripe for being the basis of a musical. This summer, audiences will no longer have to imagine what one would be like because GRINDR: THE MUSICAL is set to premiere at the 2014 West Village Musical Theatre Festival. Recently, I chatted with music, book, and lyrics writer Jacob Tischler and social media co-head Justin Petersen about their exciting, upcoming project.

Gary Naylor sees a terrifyingly uncompromising play about women held away from their hopes, their dreams, their desires, distinguished by some brilliant acting and fine use of the venue's tiny, oppressive, space.
