While editing a book on Alan Jay Lerner's life and career, Dominic McHugh, a musicology lecturer at Sheffield University, came across tragic letters between the My Fair Lady lyricist and Andrew Lloyd Webber. According to The Stage, the letters reveal Lerner's intention to help Lloyd Webber with The Phantom of the Opera, but his inability to do so upon the discovery that he had lung cancer.

Sarah Brightman has just cancelled her US Tour dates. On her Facebook page, she wrote, 'I have suffered a hairline fracture to my ankle and have been advised by my doctors to rest it until September by which time it will have fully recovered. I have, regrettably, taken the decision to cancel my forthcoming US dates in August. I truly apologise for any disappointment caused.'

Tickets are now on sale for Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which makes its premiere in Columbus as part of a new North American tour. With reinvented staging and scenic design, this new version of PHANTOM, the longest running show in Broadway history, will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this one of the largest productions on tour in North America.

Today in 1988, The Phantom of the Opera opened at the Majestic Theatre, where it has played for 9980 performances and still running. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart, the musical opened in the West End in 1986, celebrating its 25th anniversary in October 2011. It won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical, and Michael Crawford (in the title role) won the 1986 Olivier and 1988 Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical. It is the longest-running Broadway show by a wide margin, the second longest-running West End musical, and the third longest-running West End show overall.
