BWW Reviews: Too Little Life in Matthew Wild's CABARET at the Fugard, Old Chum
by David Fick - Apr 2, 2015

The Fugard Theatre's production of CABARET begins with a perfectly realised moment of theatre. Before long, the magic of that moment wears off, and this production of the classic John Kander, Fred Ebb and Joe Masteroff musical begins to flounder in Matthew Wild's directionless staging of the piece.

BWW Reviews: Nashville Rep's Stunning DEATH OF A SALESMAN
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 17, 2015

Hitting perhaps too close to home for some and harkening back to memories best left unrecalled, while challenging audiences to examine their own lives, Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman remains an emotional, visceral theatrical masterpiece. Now, through March 28, it is vividly recaptured, like so much lightening in a bottle, in a deeply affecting production from Nashville Rep, directed with finesse by Rene D. Copeland and acted by an all-star cast of Nashville performers who together create a stunningly specific place in time that somehow is timeless and universal.

BWW Reviews: THE WOODSMAN Ventures Into Enchanting Visual Storytelling in the Land of Oz
by Rachel Weinberg - Jan 19, 2015

Like the blockbuster hit about a misunderstood green witch from the West, 'The Woodsman' at 59E59 Theaters introduces audiences to a lesser-known tale from the land of Oz. The production relies heavily on visual spectacle to tell the story of a young woodsman who falls in love with a slave girl, only to be punished by the Wicked Witch of the East, who bewitches his ax to befell his limbs one-by-one until all that remains is tin. Written by James Ortiz and co-directed by Ortiz and Claire Karpen (who is concurrently performing as Cinderella in another forest-centric production of 'Into the Woods' at Roundabout Theatre Company), 'The Woodsman' is a creative delight and distinctive in its use of non-verbal storytelling. The forest in these woods has a very natural feel, as the ensemble employs real branches on the stage. Yet Ortiz's incorporation of his original puppetry designs in the shows adds a mystical element.

BWW Reviews: 'Man About Cabaret' Eric Michael Gillett Conveys the Essence of Noel Coward in Charming Show at the Laurie Beechman
by Billie Roe - Nov 6, 2014

The expression “Man About Town”--commonly defined as a socially active, sophisticated man devoted to the pursuit of pleasure by frequenting fashionable nightclubs, theaters, and restaurants--might perfectly describe the persona of Sir Noel Coward. Known for his acerbic wit, flamboyance, and savoir-faire, Sir Noel is an icon in theatrical history as a celebrated playwright, composer, director, actor, and singer. Could there be a better subject to explore during an evening of cabaret? In his recent run of five shows at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, Man About Town: The Wit and Wisdom of Noel Coward, veteran singer/actor/director Eric Michael Gillett proved he was more than up to the task of paying tribute to the legendary Coward.

On Oct, 22, 1914, less than three months after the start of World War I, one of the largest food relief programs the world has ever seen was begun when the Commission for Relief in Belgium (CRB) was founded in London by a group of prominent Americans, according to Jeffrey B. Miller, author of a new nonfiction book, 'Behind the Lines, WWI's little-known story of German occupation, Belgian resistance, and the band of Yanks who saved millions from starvation' (ISBN: 978-0990689300; Milbrown Press), which chronicles the start of the CRB, the first CRB delegates, and Belgium under the harsh German rule.
