OKLAHOMA! is the first of the Rodgers & Hammerstein masterworks and is credited with establishing the musical play as a significant art form, paving the way for all others that came after it, including the works of Lerner & Loewe, Frank Loesser and Leonard Bernstein. After OKLAHOMA!, composer Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein, II (1895-1960) produced such vital works as CAROUSEL, THE KING AND I, SOUTH PACIFIC and THE SOUND OF MUSIC, making them the most important contributors to the musical-play form during the 1940s-1950s, the era that is considered the golden age of the medium.

Reprise Theatre Company will present a month-long Richard Rodgers Celebration October 2-November 2 in a variety of venues across Los Angeles. The series of concerts, symposiums, staged readings, screenings and cabarets will explore the diversity and scope of the work of one of the most important figures in the American Musical.

South Coast Repertory kicks off the 2009-10 Season with Putting It Together, a compilation of Stephen Sondheim songs, that the composer put together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, creating a narrative set at a cocktail party in an elegant Manhattan condo. The non-traditional musical, led by Broadway and television star Harry Groener, has a cast of five (a glamorous but slightly jaded couple, a starry-eyed younger couple and a savvy observer) who sing more than 30 songs that reflect their lives, lifestyles and moods of the moment. Some of the songs will be familiar, some less so, a few were even cut from their original musical scores, but they are all sophisticated, smart and drop-dead droll. All, in other words, Sondheim.

Leavel will play Donna Sheridan, while Dossett will star opposite her as Sam Carmichael. The two take over the roles starting September 22.

On Stage 2, receiving its world premiere is Mark St. Germain?s Freud?s Last Session from June 10 through 28. Glen Berger?s hit Off-Broadway play Underneath the Lintel will play on Stage 2 from July 8 though 26.

Multi-platinum Country music star Lorrie Morgan has been cast in the Broadway-bound production of the hit movie PURE COUNTRY, producers Randall L. Wreghitt, Chris Presley and Ellen Rusconi announced today. Morgan joins fellow Country music star Joe Nichols to headline the new musical that is expected to open on Broadway in early 2010. As previously announced, Nichols takes on the role of ?Rusty' [?Dusty' in the movie], which was made famous in the film by George Strait. Morgan now joins him to play the role of ?Lula,' Rusty's ruthless manager, which was created on film by Lesley Anne Warren.

Chicago Dramatists has a special block of orchestra tickets on reserve to A STEADY RAIN, the hottest upcoming Broadway show starring Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman and directed by Tony-Award nominee John Crowley. With stars of this caliber, tickets are in high demand, but Chicago Dramatists will be hosting a benefit performance on November 14th. Teena Marie and Friends, originally scheduled for Sunday, August 30 at the Fox Theatre has been reschedule, and a new line-up has been announced. Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Teena Marie and Charlie Wilson, with a special appearance by K'Jon, will now head to the Fox Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 28.
