In March 3, 1819, the Civilization Fund Act was passed. It encouraged benevolent societies (Christian missions and the government) to provide education to Native Americans. This meant introducing the Indians to new skills, language and even culture. To author Metha Parisien Bercier, it meant being taken away from her family, thrust into an unfamiliar world and quite possibly turning her back on the life she knew. In her autobiography, “TOMORROW,” MY SISTER SAID; TOMORROW NEVER CAME, she talks about her experiences during this remarkable era and in the process lends a rare glimpse into the journey of her people and the struggles and triumphs they found along the way.

Tennessee-born novelist Linda Lappin author of the Indie classic,The Etruscan, takes on the mystery of Italy's celebrated Monster Park in her new novel Signatures in Stone. The park, located in Bomarzo not far from Rome, originally created in the 16th century by a Roman nobleman as a memorial to his wife, leads visitors on a journey through hell represented by its eerie sculptures of ogres, mermaids, and giants. Art historians are puzzled by its meaning: is it a pagan itinerary of initiation, a surreal illustration of its patron's weirdest nightmares, an allegory for political events, or a series of emblems concealing an alchemical formula for making gold? And who was the real mastermind behind this complex creation? Was it, perhaps, as some scholars believe, one of the greatest sculptors of the Italian Renaissance?

It's a simple tale, mostly predictable, but somehow perfect for the Goodspeed stage. It's light, fun and lends itself to big dance numbers and colorful costumes (Tracy Christensen, design), though nothing just smacks of the '20s, interestingly.

Houston Grand Opera opened their Winter Repertory offerings with an impressive and rousing production of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's iconic book musical SHOW BOAT. The musical historically changed the face of American Musical Theatre and introduced a genre of entertainment that many feel OKLAHOMA perfected and solidified.
